Flag to Flagpole Ratio

Ensuring the correct flag-to-flagpole ratio enhances both aesthetics and durability. See the general guideline for selecting the appropriate flag size based on your flagpole height:

Residential Flagpole Installation Instructions

Important Considerations

  • Choose a safe location for your flagpole, away from power lines, vehicles, and potential obstructions.
  • Check underground utilities before digging. Always contact your local “Dig Safe” service.
  • Keep the pole straight and dry before installation.
  • Do not allow children to operate the flagpole unsupervised.
  • Do not climb or lean ladders against the flagpole.

Parts List

  1. Flagpole Shaft
  2. Ground Sleeve
  3. Butt Extension (for 40’ poles)
  4. Flagpole Fittings:
    Gold Ball (ornamental top)
    Halyard (rope)
    Flag Snaps (2)
    Truck (pulley assembly)
    ◦ Tube of Loctite
    ◦ Cleat with Screws
    ◦ Decorative Flash Collar

Tools & Materials Required (not included)

  • Level
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Cedar Wedges
  • Dry Sand
  • Cement
  • Drill & Drill Bit
  • Shovel/Excavating Tools (for 40’ poles)
  • Crushed Stone
  • Sledgehammer
  • Hacksaw

Foundation Installation

  1. Dig a hole 3 to 4 times the diameter of the pole. Ensure it is deep enough so the ground sleeve is flush with the surface.
  2. Place the ground sleeve in the center of the hole and add 2” of crushed stone at the bottom for drainage.
  3. Pour cement around the ground sleeve, filling the hole halfway.
  4. Check alignment using a level to ensure the sleeve is plumb. Adjust as necessary before adding more cement.

Flagpole Assembly

  1. Keep the protective plastic wrap on the pole during installation.
  2. If your pole requires a butt extension, insert it firmly into the base and secure it.
  3. Attach the flash collar over the pole.
  4. Secure the gold ball onto the truck with Loctite, using pliers to tighten the lock nut.
  5. Mount the truck (pulley assembly) at the top of the pole and secure it with self-tapping screws.
  6. Thread the halyard through the pulley, attach flag snaps, and secure the ends with a square knot.

Flagpole Installation

  1. Once the cement is fully set, remove the upper ⅔ of the plastic wrap from the pole.
  2. Raise the pole upright and lower it into the sleeve, ensuring the pulley faces away from prevailing winds.
  3. Use cedar wedges to keep the pole centered and plumb.
  4. Fill the sleeve with dry sand to secure the pole and remove excess shims.
  5. Drill holes and attach the cleat 48” above ground level, opposite the pulley.

Caring for Your Fiberglass Flagpole

  • Regularly clean the halyard (rope) to prevent dirt buildup.
  • Secure flag snaps when the flag is not flying to prevent noise and damage.
  • Use mild soap and water to clean dirt marks; avoid abrasive materials.
  • Avoid flying the flag in high winds or extreme weather to prevent damage.
